Contemporary oil painting at the Mall Galleries

The Royal Institute of Oil Painters holds its annual exhibition at the Mall Galleries in central London, with beautiful works from abstracts to still life

Portuguese Bowl with Apricots by Lucy McKie

Founded in 1882, the Royal Institute of Oil Painters' annual exhibition runs at the Mall Galleries from 29 November to 10 December. Works focus on colour but genres vary from landscapes, cityscapes, abstracts and still life. Pictured above: Portuguese Bowl with Apricots by Lucy McKie.

Entry costs £4 but Deco readers are offered two free tickets. Mention Deco at the front desk.

Real paintings are oil paintings..that's the view a surprising number of us still hold. It is, by all accounts, a difficult medium to master, but if offers scope for layers and intensity - and of course oil paintings will last for centuries, as a visit to any national gallery will prove.

So it's nice to think that the paintings on show at this year's Royal Institute of Oil Painters' (ROI) exhibition will more than likely be enjoyed by art lovers 500 years hence...and if everyone's been packed off to live on Mars by then, they'll surely have taken our artworks with them.
