Lean against the wall furniture

Lean against the wall furniture

You can't fail to have noticed the trend for furniture that leans against the wall. It's so useful and space-saving and you don't drills, screws or spirit levels...

Shelving units so often need to be fixed to the wall, while furniture such as desks and console tables can be too deep for small rooms. So thanks heavens for lean-to furniture, which is a particular godsend for those of us who are not handy. Pictured above: Lean Man ash wood and MDF single units by Notts-based And Then Design are perfect bedside companions, £175

Lean-to furniture has a get up and go, a boil-in-the-bag, or is it a one-stop-shop quality to it.. Just unpack it, assemble it - hopefully with relative ease - and lean it against the wall. Suddenly your hallway, bedroom or sitting looks transformed as that which was on the floor is now neatly ordered on shelves.

Heal's' new Ambrose collection for smaller spaces has a pleasing number of lean-to pieces, including a desk, a hall coat rack and a console table. The Nomad sustainable oak shelving unit is a particular favourite, as you can add things to it..such as a shelf and a mirror.

Notts-based And Then Design has done a lot to encourage us to embrace the lean-to look with its Lean Man console units, now produced in myriad colours and several sizes. Pieces are made from ash and MDF.

Ikea's small space range launched this year includes the triangular leaning wall shelf by Keiji Ashizawa, which is 149cm high and just 32cm deep, so it really won't be in the way. It's a recyclable product and it's a snip at £45.

John Lewis has a good selection of lean-to storage

Alex Moore is a teacher in Totnes and he says he and wife Victoria have been amazed at what a difference some lean-to pieces have made to their small flat. 'Neither of us is handy and we just don't have the budget to have built-in furniture made.

'But we have loads of books that were piled on side tables and on the floor and we were despairing of getting things in order.. to cut a long story short, some ladder shelving from John Lewis has transformed our sitting room and their lean-to bamboo ladder towel rail means no more soggy towels bunched up on a small radiator.'
