Rise in sales of British-grown orchids

Waitrose & Partners says it's seen a 43 per cent rise in sales of its British grown orchids over the past year, further evidence that the orchid has become the nation's favourite plant

Waitrose says more than two million orchids, in over 100 varieties, are grown for it by Double H Nursery in Milton Keynes. Once the preserve of luxury hotels and wealthy individuals, we've all got in on the orchid action thanks to a fall in prices - Waitrose orchids start at around £7.50. Chris Wood, Product Developer for Horticulture and Outdoor, says orchids look exotic but are very easy to care for:'They bring vibrant colour to a home, are low maintenance and continue to flower throughout the year. Even when you might think the plant might have perished, it will come back and flower at a later date.'

*Waitrose' Violet Queen variety won an Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society in 2018.
