Spring shopping ideas... for Mother's Day and every day

With Mother's Day hoving into view you may be inspired to buy more than flowers for your mum...a vase to put them in perhaps, or a rose scented candle. We've also been on the hunt for useful and always attractive pieces for the home, from baskets and bedside cabinets to pot stands and linen cushions and fabrics. All eco friendly, of course

Bedrooms

A bedside table that has drawers and a shelf is super useful and we're very taken with the new two-drawer Black Lotus solid walnut wood Cube cabinet from the Natural Bed Company. Black Lotus Cube and Shaker is their new range of contemporary bedroom furniture made exclusively for the company by a small family business in Vietnam. Available in solid oak too, the Black Lotus range include chests of drawers, tallboys and end of bed seating/storage units.

For soft bedroom lighting, and as a foil for wood, check out the Eos soft goose feather lampshade (in white, grey and light brown), from £59, with LED A bulb, £19.95, by Vita Copenhagen. And for the casually elegant bed, dress with a pure British wool herringbone weave throw in Driftwood from The Great British Ottomoman Company, £91.

And for heavenly scent, the English Rose soy wax candle from new brand Bubbles & Light is, well, a delight - and a perfect gift for Mother's Day. Based in Hampstead, north London, Bubbles & Light candles are hand-poured in the store, which also offers artisan soaps and skincare products. Candle scents are created using pure essential oils and the brand promises no nasty chemical ingredients.

Flowers

....are always appreciated.. but if you feel that's a touch dull for your mum, can we suggest vases large or small, as one can never have enough... LSA International won't need any introduction having been the go-to company for affordable but very stylish glassware for decades..we love their jewel bright glass Posy Vases, £20, which are perfect for small bunches of flowers and come in a host of colours.

Just as charming are Live Laugh Love's  small pastel glass vases, £8.95 each.Staying with flowers, what could be nicer than partaking tea from the Flowerdrop china teapot/cup, a pretty joys of spring design by renowned textile designers Collier Campbell, £24 at colliercampbell.com. Or if you're in and out of coffee shops all day, why not carry your own bit of William Morris in your bag in the form of Pomme, one of Morris' designs transferred to Ecoffee's re-useable and bio-degradable bamboo fibre cups, £11.95.

Eco friendly fabrics

Linen is one of the most eco friendly textiles, along with organic cotton. For mid-century modern aficionados, you'll love the colourful 50s’-style geometric prints of London-based surface print designer Zoe Attwell. They adorn her 100 per cent linen cushions, which cost £50 each and measure 45x45cm, £50.

If you like traditional linen floral designs on the other hand, Scottish textiles company Inchyra uses pure Belgian linen which undergoes an 'ageing' process for that antique look. Their latest design is Framboise, taken from a fragment of a linen found in the South of France that dates back to around 1900. £85 per metre and it goes well with a pure linen ticking, £45 per metre.

With holiday season not far off...for lightweight organic cotton towels, see the Kala range from Stitch by Stitch. Handwoven in the Kutch region of northern India, these towels come in in a range of bright modern designs.

Reclaim it

On the other hand if you like the reclaimed vibe you might be interested in vintage Spanish tile brand Maitland & Poate's unique pot stands made from reclaimed timber and ceramic tiles. A cool way to protect your table or countertop from heat damage. £60.

It may be warming up but evenings can still be chilly..which is where wood burning stoves come into their own. There is endless debate as to whether burning wood is better/less good than burning any other sort of material to generate heat, so if you do have a wood burner you may be interested in Firemizer...a patented product its manufacturers claim can increase the burn time of wood, so you use less of it. It's a mesh grid made up of a blend of stainless steel alloys that are welded together and it's designed to sit at the base of your stove or hearth. One grid typically lasts up to 500 burning hours and the manufacturer says it can reduce by 38 per cent the amount of solid fuel bought over a year. Firemizer.com. £19.99

Lastly, why not turn your empty wine bottles into table lamps with re-chargeable LED corks from gadget people Red 5 (red5.co.uk). Corks fit most bottles and come with a USB cable. Charge time 1 hour and you get 2.5 hours of light - enough time to light the dinner party table. £9.99.
